AI agent hosting

Best AI Agent Hosting: Managed Platforms, VPS and Self-Hosting

Where an AI agent should run depends on where inference happens, how much uptime you need, what the agent accesses, and how much infrastructure you want to manage. There is no single best host — there is a best architecture for a given set of constraints.

Hosting Architecture Decision Variables

Before comparing providers, identify the constraints that matter for your deployment. Each variable narrows the set of viable hosting options.

Decision variableWhat it affectsKey question
Inference locationWhether you need GPU/VRAM or just CPU/RAMDoes the model run on the same machine as the agent?
Uptime requirementsProcess supervision, redundancy, and recovery pathMust the agent be reachable 24/7, or is session-based enough?
Persistent stateStorage durability, backup strategy, and migration pathDoes the agent accumulate state that must survive restarts?
Browser/tool executionRAM headroom, kernel compatibility, and sandboxingDoes the agent launch browsers, containers, or heavyweight tools?
Remote accessNetwork exposure, authentication, and encryptionWho connects to the agent, and from where?
Security boundaryIsolation model, credential exposure, and trust scopeIs the agent single-user or multi-tenant?
ConcurrencyCPU cores, RAM scaling, and process managementHow many agents or sessions run simultaneously?
MaintenanceOS updates, runtime upgrades, and monitoringHow much operational work are you willing to do?
Cost structureFixed vs. usage-based, renewal pricing, hidden costsIs the agent always-on (favoring fixed) or bursty (favoring usage)?

Hosting Options Compared

Hosting modelGood fitTradeoffCost structure
CPU VPSAlways-on API-backed agents. Full OS control, persistent storage, predictable monthly cost. You manage the OS, security, updates, and backups.Fixed monthly ($10-24/mo for 2-4 GB RAM). Always-on cost is predictable.
Managed container platformContainerized agents with less operational burden. Automatic deploys, scaling, and process management.Less OS-level control. Storage and networking may work differently than a traditional VPS.Usage-based or hybrid. Can be cheaper for bursty workloads, more expensive for always-on.
GPU cloudAgent + local model inference on the same machine. Required when VRAM is the constraint.Significantly more expensive. Availability varies by GPU type and region. Persistent storage is often separate.Hourly ($0.33-0.53+/hr for 48 GB VRAM). Always-on cost is $240-387+/mo before storage.
Local hardwarePrivacy, development, local file access, and local model inference without per-hour cost. You own uptime, connectivity, power, and physical security. Machine must stay on for 24/7 use.Upfront hardware + electricity. No per-hour hosting bill.
HybridLocal development + VPS production. Or VPS agent + GPU cloud for inference-heavy tasks.More complex architecture. State synchronization and networking between components.Combined. Match each component to its cost-optimal tier.

Provider Recommendations by Use Case

These are use-case recommendations based on documented specifications and pricing — not claims of equivalent hands-on performance.

Railway HobbyManaged deployment for a containerized agent$5/month minimum including $5 of usage. Published usage rates are $10/GB-month RAM, $20/vCPU-month, and $0.15/GB-month volume storage. No GPU is listed for this plan. Official plan detailsYou want a fixed monthly server allocation, root-level control, or GPU inference.

Existing local hardwarePrivacy, development, and local filesNo hosting bill, but CPU, RAM, VRAM, storage, electricity, and internet uptime depend on the machine you already own.The agent must stay reachable when your computer is asleep, offline, or being restarted.

Hosting a website your AI agent built? That is a different workload.

A static AI-built website, React frontend, or conventional Node/Python application does not need a GPU just because AI helped create it. Flashcloud documents hosting for static builds and supported Node/Python applications, and separately offers VPS plans. Verify your deployment runtime, persistent processes, backups, renewal price, and resource limits against the plan before paying.

This is not a recommendation for local LLM inference, GPU workloads, or unattended browser agents on shared hosting. For those, compare the VPS, container and GPU options above.

AI Agent Hosting Requirements: CPU, RAM, GPU and Storage

WorkloadPlanning starting pointImportant limitation
API-backed text agent1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 25–50 GB persistent SSD, no GPUThis is a planning floor, not a benchmark. Add headroom for concurrent jobs, logs, databases, and updates.
Agent with browser and database2 vCPUs, 4–8 GB RAM, 50–100 GB persistent SSD, no GPU when using a hosted model APIBrowser concurrency can dominate memory. Measure the complete workload before downsizing.
Agent plus local modelCPU and system RAM for the runtime; VRAM or unified memory large enough for model weights, quantization, context, and overhead; persistent storage for weights and working dataModel name alone is not enough to size hardware. Use the LLM RAM / VRAM calculator before selecting a GPU.
Always-on means more than leaving a process running. Production hosting needs persistent state, automatic restart after a crash or reboot, backups, monitoring, secure remote access, controlled secrets, and enough capacity for workload spikes. A cheap plan without those controls is not automatically the cheapest reliable option.

Can I host my own AI agent?

Yes. Self-hosting means running the agent runtime on infrastructure you control: a VPS, home server, Mac, Linux workstation, or GPU instance. The model can still be local or provided through an external API. For a general server shortlist, see the Best VPS for AI Agents. For runtime-specific constraints, use the separate Hermes VPS guide or OpenClaw Hosting guide.

Can I run an AI agent locally?

Yes. Local hosting is a strong fit for development, private workflows, and agents that need direct access to local files or applications. The tradeoff is operational: the machine must stay powered, connected, patched, and recoverable for 24/7 use. Start with the local AI server guide or compare Mac hardware for local AI.

How Much Does It Cost to Host an AI Agent?

An API-backed agent can start with a modest CPU server, but its model API bill may exceed the hosting bill. GPU hosting reverses the cost profile: even a $0.53/hour GPU is about $387 for 730 continuously running hours, before storage and tax. Keep server, storage, network, backup, and model inference costs separate so an attractive hourly price does not hide the always-on total.

How AI Agent Hosting Providers Are Compared

The recommendations above rank documented fit for a named use case, not unmeasured performance. Price, plan, CPU, RAM, GPU/VRAM, storage, persistence, deployment control, and material limitations must be traceable to a current source. Equivalent performance or reliability rankings will be published only after the workload, region, configuration, software version, test date, recovery behavior, and all costs can be reproduced.
